Just before Christmas 2014 it was brought to the Vestry’s attention that a Roof Repair Grant could be applied for — for churches in Scotland, with a deadline of 30th January. St Mungo’s had applied to the Dunderdale Fund for some emergency repairs and it was suggested that we apply to have the whole roof and gutters checked out and repaired.
The Vestry decided to apply, despite a very tight timeline, downloaded the form and started getting organized in filling in the form. The diocesan architect was contacted and a meeting set up to see if we could do everything by the deadline. This required some 13 documents and the actual form to deal with.
To cut a long story short the deadline was met with 2 days to spare with the Diocesan Architect’s help in timescales, report and costings, and with members of the Vestry helping out considerably with the taking of photographs and supplying information. It was no mean feat of determination!
We were well rewarded when we received word that we had been successful and were to be given a grant of £33,500! Other churches in the Diocese had applied for the same grant but had been refused – so thanks to Rebecca and all who helped to make this possible!
If everything goes to plan a new slated roof with new leadwork should be in place before the winter. We will then turn our minds and muscles to decorating the interior once the building is watertight. Have your paintbrushes and rollers ready!
